'A Study Has Found'

Brit laments elsewhere that standards are falling on the BBC News website - but all's well with the world when it can still come up with stuff like this. I just love this kind of story - especially when it's so sensitively illustrated. As you scroll down through paragraph after paragraph (more crossheads would have been good), feeling your will to live slowly sapping away, ask
yourself, when you arrive just barely alive at the final sentence: What have I learnt today?

  1. We appear to be teasing out the secrets of the nation's genius at the moment. First shopping and now melancholy. Surely the explanation for the disproportionate misery of the female over-65s is the increased likelihood of a definitively retired male presence around the home? The decline of the local boozer must have also hit them hard.

  2. Indeed Gaw - the local boozer especially. I think the gist of these 'findings' is that people with more reasons to be unhappy and more unhappy. Earth-shattering stuff.

  3. Yes: 'People who are lonely are more unhappy than those who are either not lonely or dead', study finds.

  4. Well, I suppose we do have a national genius for never being more than an idea away from unhappiness. Feeling too good? Read Dockery and Son with its very English sense of abject failure added "just for you". Better, perhaps, to become the Arkin character in "Little Miss Sunshine". I doubt he regretted not spending more time weeping behind the net curtains.

  5. They will have even more reason now that equality has, sort of, become more equal and the darlings have to retire at same age as the marginalised male population, it's all your fault Germaine.
The sound of wee Geordie Osborne's pin up picture hitting the ground across the land can be heard in Calais.
